This piece explores the evolving nature of identity and emotion, drawing inspiration from the Japanese concepts of Tatemae (the outward self) and Honne (the true inner self).
A ring of masks encircles a glowing center—each mask representing a different outward persona, or Tatemae, while the radiant core symbolizes the inner self where our most genuine truths and desires reside. This contrast invites reflection on the question: Who are we beneath the many phases we present to the world?
The moon sits centrally below the masks, serving as both anchor and metaphor. The moon itself never changes, but the light that is cast upon it through each phase presents it differently to an observer. In this piece, it symbolizes a quiet persistence, grounding the work in a sense of enduring truth amidst change.
